چکیده

Most medicinal plants are flowering plants and they also serve as ornamental plants. Measurement of trace element content in medicinal plants, drugs and extracts may be relevant in view of e.g. human health, animal health and environmental relations. This fact has a great significance since about half of the plant drugs available in the trade originate from natural habitats and the element content of herbs may originate from soil or air pollution, or relate to the soil type on which the plant grows. Microelements in extracts may be relevant in nutritional point of view or for therapeutic purposes. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Antibacterial activity of two medicinal plants: Withania somnifera and Curcuma longa

In vitro aqueous and ethanol extracts of Withania somnifera (leaves and fruits) and Curcuma Longa were evaluated for antibacterial activities against Basillus subtillis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and S.epidermitis. The inorganic extract of W. somnifera leaves showed more antibacterial activity as compared to the organic fraction. While both the organic and inorganic phases of frui...

Total antioxidant capacities and reduction of ferric ions by extracts of three medicinal plants and their fractions

ABSTRACT Introduction: Medicinal plants belong to Lamiaceae family are potential sources of new drugs to improve the treatment of diseases which its treatment is linked to anti-oxidative agents. In this paper, antioxidant potentials of some Lamiaceae species have been evaluated by two methods. Methods: phosphomolybdate assay for total antioxidant capacity and ferric reducing a...

Prenylation of flavonoids by biotransformation of yeast expressing plant membrane-bound prenyltransferase SfN8DT-1.

Prenylated flavonoids are natural products that exhibit diverse biological effects and often represent the active components of various medicinal plants. This study demonstrated the production of prenylated naringenin by biotransformation using transgenic yeast expressing naringenin 8-dimethylallyltransferase, a membrane-bound enzyme, without feeding of prenyl donors. This method provides the p...

The Effect of Some Cultural Practices on the Growth and Yield of the Medicinal Plant Solanum Virginianum Schrad. (katuwelbatu)

Experiments were conducted to study the effect of inorganic, organic and combined inorganic + organic fertilizer and natural shade under Gliricidia on the growth and dry matter (DM) yield of the medicinal plant Solanum virginianum Schrad. The yield of total dry matter and of different plant parts were also studied in plants harvested at 70, 90 and 110 days after establishment. Application of co...

Phytochemical Approach and Bioanalytical Strategy to Develop Chaperone-Based Medications

Currently, no pharmaceuticals for the etiological treatment of degenerative protein-misfolding diseases (e.g., ALS, Alzheimer's or prion diseases) are commercially available. In this technical note theoretical considerations and practical approaches concerning the development of chaperone-based medications from medicinal plants (e.g., Ginkgo biloba) are reviewed and discussed in detail. Phytoch...
